2007 Beef Performance
and Carcass Quality (BPCQ) Show
The Ohio State Fair
The Beef Performance and Carcass Quality Show evaluates traits which determine the value of a beef project. The show focuses on the combination of growth and carcass characteristics that determine the carcass value gained per day on test. This is an opportunity for junior market beef exhibitors to participate in the live show at the Ohio State Fair as well as compete in a carcass competition designed to tie knowledge of the beef production with production of high-quality beef for consumers.

Most Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where do I weigh in my calves?
If your county weigh-in meet the following criteria then you can use this weight. 1) The scale must have been certified within the last year. 2) The weigh-in must occur between Dec. 1, 2006 and Jan. 15, 2006. If your county does not meet this criteria, you must find one that does.
2. Do you have to show the animal in the live BPCQ class at the State Fair?
No, you can enter the calf for the live show in any of the other division such as a breed, heifer or crossbred, if you so choose. The live placing of the calf will have no affect the final rank in the BPCQ contest. But you must participate in a live class in order to paricipate in BPCQ.
3. How much does performance account for in the final rank?
The final rank is based on a combination of performance and carcass traits. No strict percentage is assigned performance. Carcass value gained per day on test is how the animals will be ranked. In order to gain carcass value the animal must increase in weight over the test period as well as display carcass traits which will be rewarded on the designated grid. An animal will have a difficult time to be competitive, if the calf does not have an average daily gain of 3.0 lbs/day or greater.
4. Does the animal need another ear tag in addition to a county ear tag?
Yes, you must have a BPCQ ear tag. Duplicated numbers from various counties may occur and in order to make sure data is recorded correctly and final rank calculated accurately, the BPCQ ear tag is mandatory. The ear tag can be placed in either the left or right ear.
5. How many cattle can I initially enter?
An exhbitor can nose print a maxium of eight head for the Junior Market Show. Any combination of BPCQ and regular Junior market cattle can be noseprinted; however, the total cannot exceed eight.
6. Am I committed to the BPCQ contest when I weigh-in or enter the calves?
No, an exhibitor does not have to make a final decision whether a calf will be BPCQ until check-in at the Ohio State Fair on Thursday, August 10.
